Hessenthaler blasts Mali FA
Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler is to write to the Mali FA to protest about injured striker Mamady Sidibe playing for his country in their African Nations Cup game with the Seychelles on Sunday. The Gills allowed the 22-year-old to join up with the squad last Wednesday, despite him being out since August 26 because of knee ligament damage. However his treatment continued while he was there and the club did not expect him to play in the match. Hessenthaler was then left fuming after discovering that Sidibe played from the start in a game in which he also scored.Sidibe returned to Britain and met with Hessenthaler to explain the reasons why he played.Hessenthaler said: 'We are very disappointed Mali have pressured a young lad into playing when we knew he wasn't fit. We have told Mama our views and dealt with the matter internally. He definitely wasn't fit when he went away and shouldn't have played.'I shall be writing to the Mali FA in the next couple of days and protesting in the strongest possible terms. What they did in pressuring him to play was totally out of order,' he added on the club's official website.
