Africa: Nigeria set for Dakar tribute
JOHANNESBURG, Oct 8 (Reuters) - A digest of soccer stories
from around the African continent in recent days:
NIGERIA - Nigeria have named a squad of 25 domestic-based
players for this weekend's charity match in Senegal in aid of
the victims of the ferry disaster, which claimed some 1,000
lives.
The hastily arranged fixture will be played in Dakar on
Saturday. Coach Christian Chukwu will miss the match as he
travels to Malawi to watch the Africa Nations Cup qualifier
against Angola, who are both in the same group as Nigeria.
Instead, the squad will be handled by assistant coach Austin
Eguavoen. The squad includes World Cup goalkeeper Vincent
Enyeama.
SOUTH AFRICA - Former Mozambican national coach Arnaldo
Salvado has become the second casualty of the new South African
soccer season, fired by his premier league club Black Leopards
after the weekend.
Salvado, who only took over the team in June, was dismissed
after three losses in four league matches.
Last week African Wanderers fired their coach Johnny
Ferreira after just three games. Salvado was the first coach
from Mozambique to work in South Africa.
ZIMBABWE - Goalkeeper Muzondiwa Gonese of Zimbabwean premier
league club Masvigo United has been banned from soccer for life
after an assault on a referee last month, officials announced on
Friday.
Gonese attacked referee Philip Kawara with a double-footed
lunge during a cup semi-final against AmaZulu after a penalty
was awarded against him.
Masvingo striker Lloyd Hlahla, who also attacked the
referee, was suspended indefinitely with a review of the
decision to made at the end of the 2004 season, officials said.
Masvigo were also kicked out of the cup competition. Zimbabwean
referees on Saturday threatened to boycott domestic matches in
protest at the attack.
IVORY COAST - Ivory Coast's national team gathered in France
on Monday to begin a week-long training camp as the coach Robert
Nouzaret took advantage of the availability of his
European-based players, officials said.
The four-day camp was being held at Sainte-Mazie in the
south of France with a friendly planned against Nice on
Thursday.
A total of 25 players were called up with the Ivorians not
involved in African Nations Cup action this weekend. The group
includes Dagui Bakarai, the French-born striker from Lens who in
the past has repeatedly turned down invitations to play for the
country where his parents were born. Also called up for the
first time was Sedan striker Alain Liri.
