Bodmer warns title isn't Lyon's yet
PARIS, March 27 (Reuters) - Winning a seventh consecutive Ligue 1 title looks a mere formality for Olympique Lyon but midfielder Mathieu Bodmer insisted his club had won nothing yet.
Lyon, nine points clear of second-placed Girondins Bordeaux
with eight matches left, travel to mid-table Valenciennes on
Sunday and will then visit Olympique Marseille.
'We've made a big step towards the title, it's true, but
we're not there yet,' Bodmer told reporters.
'We must continue to work. If we're still nine points clear
after the two away matches coming up, the title will be ours.'
Bodmer realises Valenciennes could be a problem since the
northerners beat Bordeaux 3-1 last weekend, doing Lyon a favour
in the process.
The in-form midfielder also knows Lyon will be crowned
champions whatever Bordeaux do if they can win five of their
last eight matches.
Lyon, who were knocked out of the Champions League by
Manchester United in the first knockout round, are chasing their
first domestic league and Cup double. They will take on bottom
Ligue 1 club Metz in the French Cup quarter-finals next month.
Weekend action will start on Saturday with Bordeaux
welcoming third-placed Nancy in a match that will help decide
who qualifies for the Champions League.
All games but that one are on Sunday because Paris St
Germain and Racing Lens, both threatened by relegation, will be
battling it out in the League Cup final at the Stade de France
on Saturday.
Nancy are three points behind Bordeaux and six ahead of
fourth-placed Marseille, visiting Lorient on Sunday and
desperate to bounce back.
The former European champions slumped to a 1-0 French Cup
defeat by fifth division Carquefou and then lost 1-0 at home to
strugglers Sochaux in the league.
The top two from Ligue 1 qualify for the Champions League
with the third-placed club entering the showcase event's
qualifying round.
